What's my favorite city in 'Merica to have a drink? Hard question. Cool places serving great brews and cocktails are everywhere now. To answer this inquiry easier, I'll narrow down my choices to three cities I spent the most time in last year for freelance photography work. This included New Orleans, Las Vegas and the place I call home, Portland Oregon. Not a bad little collection of party towns, each with their own unique way to imbibe.
New Orleans easily has the richest and most unique drinking culture of the three. You can rip huge beers right on Bourbon Street for only a few bucks a pop. Hurricanes large and small can be sipped from colorful drinking vessels in just about every social spot. And well crafted cocktails can be found in more local pubs than ever. One can even give a little credit for our country's growing cocktail scene to NOLA. This town appreciates and conserves their drinking past better than anyone. If you don't believe this, take a trip to Orleans during the Tales of the Cocktail gathering held there annually every July. This one-of-a-kind event is the world's best representation of cocktail culture both past and present. Add it to your alcohol consuming bucket list, you'll be happy you did.
Las Vegas is the newest kid on the fancy cocktail block. The smoked filled lounges of Sin City yesteryear are long gone and have been replaced with multi- million dollar bars and clubs, each new one built to be bigger and badder than the previous. Comped drinks are a thing of the past so be ready to drop some serious bucks if you want to drink the good stuff here. To save a little money you can always grab a 40 and consume while casino hopping. Ahhh yeah, I can almost taste the Olde English now!
Portland falls somewhere in the middle of these two party giants. A great mixture of joints that have been around for years, backed up by newer trend setting bars and breweries that are regarded as some of the best in the country. And even when the saloons and restaurants are nicer, most usually don't get that fancy. It's rare to find establishments in Portland where the servers and the bar keeps are not wearing jeans, which is cool in my book.
So as of today, what do you think my favorite city to drink in the great ole US of A to is? Scroll through some recent on the job cocktail photos and you'll find the answer below!
And the winner of our country's greatest city to drink in is??? Portland Oregon of course! They party a little harder in Vegas and New Orleans, but something about Portland makes me super happy on the inside :)
